This is the first in-depth, comparative analysis of the Globe and the Blackfriars Theatres' performance conditions. Examining how the social and sensory qualities of these sites affected early modern dramatists, audiences and actors, the study also considers recent productions at Shakespeare's Globe and the new Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
